The Parable of Telepavision
from ‘The Book of Myths’ by Frater Magna Mater
Long ago, in the days before the Reckoning, there was disharmony in the Goddessless lands of GREYFACE. Since 1166 the forces of the GREY had painstakingly and unrelentingly sought the physical enslavement of the people. Commons were enclosed, property was privatised and artisans were replaced by factories, but still the unwashed masses were prone to uprising and rebellion. It became clear to GREYFACE that physical enslavement alone would never be enough to subdue the hearts of the people; he must forge a manacle for their minds.
So GREYFACE called upon his chief scientist; the Arch Yogi of the Scottish Chapter of the Illuminati, John Logie Baird, and he said unto him “Johnnie Boy, build me a machine that will ensnare the minds of men.” And the great and fearsome Yogi Logie did heed his master’s voice.
The very next morning Yogie Logie did visit his Lord and Master and he did place a box of wood and glass on the ground before the feet of the GREY one. “Behold,” said Yogi Logie, “I give you TelapaVision! Last night I invoked Pandora and I said unto her ‘You show me yours and I’ll show you mine.’ And Pandora did readily show me hers and I stole the idea quicker than you can say Philo T. Farnsworth.”
Yogi Logie bent over the box and the box did spill flickering light into the room and the room began to swim with images and promises. And those promises were so sweet that even GREYFACE himself began to desire low-cal cola and aerobic exercise machines and ‘Diamonite’ jewellery and fatty-sugar burgers and debt-busting loans and cars – oh the cars.
“I like it,” said GREYFACE, “It is more diabolical than my wildest and wettest dreams.” and so GREYFACE did use the monopolous and cunning Brotherhood of Bad Christians (BBC) to distribute TelepaVisions throughout the land.
And as the people watched their TelepaVisions their third eyes became closed and their souls became clouded by wants and longings. Soon their altered minds bled poison into their hearts and the people no longer sought freedom from bondage. And so dark were the mechanisms of TV that once the people were ensnared they became convinced that they needed bigger TelepaVisions to be happier and more channels to be more content and higher definition to get higher.
“A mind machine that convinces you that you need a bigger and better mind machine,” laughed GREYFACE, “Shit, this thing’s better than religion.”
GREYFACE stood upon the roof of TelepaVision Central and raised his hands high into the air as if to salute some mighty unseen God. And with a booming voice he declared “TV is the Temazepam of the people.”
